U.S. Supreme Court Unanimously Upholds Access to Mifepristone
Today, the Supreme Court released its ruling in the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Food and Drug Administration. The Court determined that the plaintiffs lack the standing to contest the FDA's approval of mifepristone, a key drug used in the prevalent medication abortion regimen. Although we anticipate ongoing challenges to medication abortion, this decision secures continued access to mifepristone.
CCRF and members of the FAB Steering Committee have released the following statement:
"The California Future of Abortion Council and the California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom are committed to protecting the rights and health of every person in California and those seeking abortion care in our state. To be clear, abortion care, including medication abortion, remains legal and accessible in California.”
“Overwhelming evidence, and more than a 20-year track record as a safe, effective, and FDA-approved medication, makes it clear that efforts to restrict access to medication abortion are politically motivated, and not based on scientific evidence or best medical practice. Medical experts, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association, agree that when medications used for abortion care are prescribed through telehealth and administered at home, it is just as safe as prescribing them in person.”
“While we are relieved by the Court’s decision, this ruling isn’t a “win.” We must keep working to protect and expand access to abortion in California, as anti-abortion politicians will continue to attack abortion care.”
