New Leadership Takes Helm at the California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom
February 2024
The California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom (CFRF) is thrilled to welcome Sylvia Castillo as its new Executive Director.
Sylvia is a seasoned leader with more than a decade of experience in coalition building and championing reproductive health, rights, and justice. As a member of CCRF for eight years, six of those serving on the CCRF Executive Committee, Sylvia brings a strong sense of history to the role and her expertise will be invaluable in guiding the Coalition through unprecedented times as attacks against abortion care and reproductive health access intensify during a critical election year.
Sylvia has successfully led efforts to expand access to sexual and reproductive health care in California, and her work resulted in the enactment of public policies that have served as models in other states. During her tenure as Director of Government + Community Affairs at Essential Access Health, Sylvia shaped and advanced the organization’s state policy platform and developed patient education and consumer awareness initiatives. Prior to joining Essential Access, Sylvia was a Policy Analyst at AltaMed Health Services in Los Angeles, where she advocated for the health and wellness of patients and their families and communities.
New Executive Advisory Board
CCRF also elected new leadership to the Executive Committee, which operates as the Coalition’s Advisory Board. Flor Hunt, Executive Director for TEACH (Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Health Care) was chosen to serve as President of the CCRF Executive Committee and Jessica Pinckney Gil, Executive Director at ACCESS Reproductive Justice will serve as Vice-President. Additional Executive Committee members include Onyemma Obiekea, Policy Director for Black Women for Wellness; Amy Chen, Senior Attorney at the National Health Law Program; Zaire Bailey, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California; Michelle Rivera, Program Manager at ACT Women and Girls; and Ruth Dawson, Legislative Attorney with the ACLU California Action.
